What is a primary and secondary name server?

Primary and Secondary name servers are the two host computers on which a domain name is hosted. When a domain lookup is carried out, the Primary DNS server is consulted first, and then the Secondary server or servers.
For example, the primary and secondary name servers of India.to are:

ns1.hoststud.com
ns2.hoststud.com
